CCA Testing¶
CCA (cold cranking amps) is the current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at a defined cold temperature while maintaining a minimum cut-off voltage. It is the most widely compared battery metric — and the most often compared incorrectly.
What CCA Measures¶
CCA answers one question: will this battery start the engine in cold weather? A higher CCA means more current is available to the starter motor at low temperature, where engine oil is thicker and cranking demand is highest.
Why the Test Temperature Matters¶
CCA is not a single universal test. The main standards measure at different temperatures:

Because JIS tests at a warmer −15°C, the same battery can show a different CCA number under JIS than under EN/SAE. The two are not interchangeable, and there is no universal percentage conversion.
How to Compare CCA Correctly¶
- Confirm the test basis first — JIS, EN, SAE, or DIN. Ask which standard the number refers to.
- Compare within one standard — only compare JIS with JIS, EN with EN.
- Match the cut-off voltage — some standards use different end voltages, which shifts the result.
- Treat the number as a reference — the final CCA for a specific battery is confirmed by the manufacturer against its test procedure.
CCA vs Capacity (Ah)¶
Ah (amp-hours) measures stored energy over time — how long the battery can supply current. CCA measures the peak current burst for starting. A vehicle with high electrical accessories needs Ah; a cold-weather diesel needs CCA. Most OEM specifications list both.
