Battery Standards Comparison¶
Battery standards are not interchangeable. They define different test temperatures, group-size conventions, and terminal layouts. Understanding these differences is essential for correct specification and comparison.
CCA Test Basis Comparison¶
CCA is measured at different temperatures depending on the standard, which is why the same battery can show different CCA values under different standards.

Group Size Differences¶
- JIS (N-series) — N150, N200, etc., size classes for Japanese/Asian vehicles
- DIN — DIN88, DIN100, etc., European size classes
- BCI Group Sizes — numeric group sizes (e.g., 24, 27, 31, 49) for North America
Terminal Conventions¶
- JIS — typically smaller posts, often with distinct polarity conventions
- DIN — recessed terminals, standard European layout
- BCI/SAE — top posts or side terminals depending on group
Why This Matters¶
Comparing a JIS CCA to an EN CCA is an apples-to-oranges comparison. The temperature difference alone shifts the number. When specifying a battery, always:
- Confirm the standard the number refers to
- Compare only within the same standard
- Confirm terminal layout and polarity
- Confirm the group size fits your vehicle
