SAE & EN Standards¶
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and EN (European Norm) standards govern automotive batteries in North America and Europe respectively. Both test CCA at −18°C, but differ in group sizing and other conventions.
SAE Standard (North America)¶
- CCA test temperature: −18°C
- Group sizing: Uses BCI group sizes (e.g., Group 24, 27, 31, 49)
- Terminals: Top posts or side terminals depending on group

EN Standard (Europe)¶

- Terminals: Recessed DIN-style terminals

Practical Implication¶
Although SAE and EN both test at −18°C, their group sizing and terminal conventions differ, so a battery is rarely interchangeable between North American and European vehicles without confirmation. Always confirm:
- Group size fits the vehicle
- Terminal layout and polarity match
- CCA meets the vehicle's cranking requirement
